Mixing for your release

A mix is where drums breathe, vocals sit forward and every element keeps its space. At Cijativojaconsulting we balance your recordings in our suite on Overtoom — offline or with you in the chair.

Mix engineer working at a console with monitors in a calm studio.

Mixing here targets singles, EPs and album tracks tracked in our live room or vocal booth, and stems recorded elsewhere. Lars de Boer and colleagues work hybrid: DAW precision plus outboard when it genuinely moves groove or colour.

You supply multitracks or a session export; we return stereo mixes (and instrumentals or TV mixes when agreed). Scope varies — read planning your mix budget before you upload stems.

Process

  1. Brief and quote

Send track count, genre, references and deadline. We confirm track, EP or hourly rate within 2 business days.

  2. Stem check

We verify sync, sample rate and naming. Missing files or clipping are fixed first — that is not mix time.

  3. Mix pass

Balance, EQ, compression, spatial placement and bus processing. First bounce within the agreed turnaround.

  4. Revisions and export

2 revision rounds on mix decisions. Final WAV (and MP3 on request) plus short mix notes.

When to book a mix

Your recordings are done and you want a release that does not sound like a bedroom demo on streaming or vinyl. Or you mixed until low end, vocal level or drum transients stopped making sense. Sometimes a band leaves our 26 m² live room with raw tracks; sometimes you upload from a home setup in the Netherlands or abroad.

Voice-over, podcast or spoken documentary work sits outside these music rates — see voice-over and podcast recording. New vocals after delivery go through vocal recording; final polish through mastering.

What to deliver

Export stems as 24-bit WAV, ideally without a limiter on every track. Use clear names: «Kick», «Snare top», «Bass DI», «Gtr L», «Vox lead». Place a shared start marker — bar 1 — in every file. Include a rough mix or reference so we hear intent, not only levels.

If you tracked here, we transfer internally. External projects use a secure link or SSD at Overtoom 141. The studio is on Overtoom in Oud-West. Trams 1 and 12 serve the Overtoom (Vondelpark) stop; from there it is about a five-minute walk. You can lock your bike at the racks along Overtoom in front of the building. We keep projects 12 months; you keep the master backup.

Offline versus attended

Track fee €185 and EP bundle €540 assume offline work: we mix on our monitors, you send bundled notes. To listen and decide in real time, book studio time at €88 per hour within Mon–Fri 10–19, Sat 11–17 (by appointment).

Attended sessions suit experimental routing, analog inserts or artists who need to hear a chorus swell live. Offline is often faster when references are clear and feedback stays in two batches.

Revisions and scope

2 revision rounds are included. A round means one email with time-stamped notes («1:12 — less bass»), not a trickle of messages over months. After round two, new instruments, arrangement changes or a completely different reference are extra work at hourly or new track rates.

Formats and loudness

We deliver stereo mix as 24-bit WAV; MP3 for quick checks can be included. We align streaming loudness to your distributor when you specify — no random brickwall unless requested. Instrumentals or clean edits are possible if noted at intake.

Mastering is separate at €98 per track or €395 for up to twelve songs. Read mastering file formats before demanding deliverables. A crushed mix leaves little headroom and makes mastering harder.

Turnaround

Timing depends on queue and complexity. A single with clean stems often returns within one to two weeks; EPs are scheduled in blocks. Peak release seasons in Amsterdam fill quickly — early intake helps.

Rush is sometimes possible for a surcharge when stems are complete and feedback is fast. Incomplete delivery does not bump other clients. Combo questions with vocal recording sit in the FAQ.

FAQ

Can I send my DAW session?

Yes if it opens without missing plugins or you include stems. Stems beat a session full of plugins we cannot load.

Do you mix Atmos or surround?

Standard delivery is stereo. Immersive formats need a separate quote — not inside the default track fee.

What if vocals need re-tracking?

Book vocal recording and send new stems. Replacing vocals may fit revision rounds if nothing else changed; otherwise it is extra work.

How should I send feedback?

One email per round with concrete time-stamped points. That keeps work inside the 2 included rounds.

Is mastering included?

No. Mastering starts at €98 per track. We recommend mastering after mix approval for release.
