Prepare for a vocal recording session

Strong takes start before you step into the booth. This guide covers what to bring, how to treat your voice and what to expect in our 11 m² vocal room — general tips, not medical advice.

Why prep buys studio time

In Amsterdam you pay for blocks of time, not for perfect lines on the first pass. At Cijativojaconsulting, Vocal recording starts at €95 per hour, with half- and full-day options when you plan several songs. Minutes spent hunting lyrics, downloading beats or sorting headphones are minutes not spent at the microphone.

Preparation does not mean your demo must sound like a release. It does mean you know what to record, your files open cleanly and your body is ready to sing or speak. That is the difference between a focused afternoon and a session that ends with scheduling a follow-up.

Rates and what is in the booth are on our vocal recording page. General questions sit in the FAQ; for a date, get in touch.

The week before

Lock your lyrics. Rewriting between takes costs focus: your brain reads instead of performs. Print words or load them on a charged tablet. Mark breaths, tricky consonants and spots where you want a change in energy.

Listen to the instrumental daily at the level you will use in session. Know intro, bridge and outro by heart. If you have reference vocals, export them as WAV or high-quality AIFF, 24 bit if possible, and note tempo and key.

Keep the week around recording day lighter: no marathon gigs without breaks, no shouting in a loud bar the night before. If your voice feels limited, postponing is better than forcing range you do not have that day.

The day before and the morning of

Sleep beats a heroic last-minute warm-up. A short night shows in pitch, stamina and patience — yours and the engineer’s. Sip water through the day; vocal folds do not hydrate from one glass right before the booth.

Skip heavy dairy or very spicy food close to recording if you notice extra mucus. Moderate coffee is fine for many singers; a large cup just before arrival can feel jittery. Eat something light about two hours ahead so your diaphragm is free but you are not light-headed.

Pack lyrics, water, your own headphones if you rely on them, and a USB drive or laptop with exports you already tested. Plan your route to Overtoom 141; The studio is on Overtoom in Oud-West. Trams 1 and 12 serve the Overtoom (Vondelpark) stop; from there it is about a five-minute walk. You can lock your bike at the racks along Overtoom in front of the building.

Files and technical basics

Deliver backing tracks as uncompressed WAV without a limiter squashing dynamics. Note sample rate and bit depth; we can convert, but matching formats saves time. Keep a local copy, not only a cloud link, in case the network is slow.

If you book several songs in one day, number them in preferred order. Mark must-have titles versus bonuses. When length or structure is unclear, email [email protected]; we usually reply within 2 business days.

Clear samples and rights before recording. We capture what you supply; cleared material is your responsibility. If your voice will sit next to other content later, podcast rights and consent explains parallel issues for spoken releases.

Warm up without shredding

Start with shoulders, neck and jaw — tension there often ends up in the sound. Long easy exhales on «s» or «f», then gentle sirens or lip trills in a comfortable range. Only then move toward the song’s tessitura.

Do not open with the highest chorus. Take a verse or a lower section first to settle mic, headphone mix and pop filter. For spoken word or rap, build articulation slowly, then tempo.

Ten to fifteen minutes is enough for most sessions. Over-warming before the booth tires you out. Silence inside the room between takes is part of recording, not wasted time.

Inside the vocal booth

Our booth is about 11 m² — tight enough for control, large enough to stand comfortably. Keep distance to the mic steady: roughly a hand between mouth and pop filter, slightly farther on loud passages. Ask the engineer to balance headphones: too loud and you sing quietly, too quiet and you push.

Many vocalists lift one earcup to hear themselves in the room; say so calmly and we adjust levels to keep bleed low. Stay still during takes; squeaky shoes or rustling jackets come back on tape.

Pause before fatigue sets in. Room-temperature water works better than ice-cold. If a line will not land after a few fair attempts, switch songs or plan a return — that is often smarter than grinding.

What we handle on site

Before you arrive we load files, set markers and choose mic and preamp to match what you described — pop, rap, spoken word or a producer reference. The building has 16 preamp channels; the booth gets what the session needs, not the entire rack at once.

During tracking we flag usable takes so you can focus on performance. Afterward we agree on deliverables: rough comp, stems or best take only — depending on your next step, such as planning a mix budget with an external mixer or our mixing service.

We keep project files 12 months unless agreed otherwise. Free cancellation applies up to 7 days before the slot; afterward the 30 percent deposit rule in our terms and conditions applies.
